Today I am posting a blog about the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and why it is important for us to know them. Let’s face it, most of us have graduated from high school, college, or university in hopes of finding a rewarding career. But for some, it is a work in progress to find a position in their field of expertise. A book titled 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has helped many people improve their educational and workplace careers. By indulging in my blog post, you will find the value in these habits and the benefits of being effective.

 “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”

A Self-Help Book Written by Stephen R. Covey

In order to get the most of this book you must be open to the concept of paradigm shift. This book allows readers to shift their mindset from bring barely productive to highly independent. Before explaining the 7 Habits, I must inform you that there are 3 categories in which they are placed in. The first is moving from Dependence to Independence, the second is working with others Interdependently, and lastly Continuous Improvements both personally and inter-personally.

What are the 7 Habits?

Habit One – Be Proactive

Habit Two – Begin With The End In Mind

Habit Three – Put First Things First

Habit Four – Think Win-Win

Habit Five – Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood

Habit Six – Synergize

Habit 7 – Sharpen The Saw

After reading these habits, I realized that some of them sync with my own personality and traits. I felt that Habit One – Be Proactive, Habit Two – Begin With The End In Mind, and Habit 7 – Sharpen The Saw were the habits that I felt are in alignment with my own personality/traits. the first habit of being proactive happens in my everyday life. From the moment I wake up, I make sure I prepare myself for the long day ahead; whether I am going to school, work, or simply heading out to complete tasks. I do these things because not only do they NEED to get done, I know they wouldn’t get done on their own… nor would anyone do it for me. It’s a tedious, time consuming consequence when you procrastinate or push things to the side to catch dust. Be productive, be proactive, and it will show effectiveness in the future.

Secondly, I know I practice Habit Two – Begin With The End In Mind. I often catch myself daydreaming about my future and how I can develop proximal goals to reach my main objective in the distant future. The author mentions, “Habit 2 is based on imagination–the ability to envision in your mind what you cannot at present see with your eyes. It is based on the principle that all things are created twice. There is a mental (first) creation, and a physical (second) creation. The physical creation follows the mental, just as a building follows a blueprint. If you don’t make a conscious effort to visualize who you are and what you want in life, then you empower other people and circumstances to shape you and your life by default. It’s about connecting again with your own uniqueness and then defining the personal, moral, and ethical guidelines within which you can most happily express and fulfill yourself. Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.” (Covey, 1989)  By thinking about our dream career, we have a blueprint in our minds on how to obtain the position. 

Last but not least, I found that Habit Seven – Sharpen The Saw is also a habit that I continuously strive to improve. I am constantly finding ways to improve my vocabulary, learn new things, remain healthy, and adapt to changing environments. It’s the best way to maintain a steady, professional lifestyle especially when it is easy to get sidetracked, since life loves to throw in an obstacle or two once in a while.

Tip On How You Can Apply The 7 Habits To The Workplace or Educational Career:

  1. Be proactive by arriving to work 15-20 minutes early. We all heard of that expression “the early bird gets the worm” which basically means if you arrive to work early you will be the first to know any updates, debriefings before the day starts, or just to get a head-start on that lengthy project your department’s been working on. For students, let’s choose a positive attitude while in class. Choose to focus your efforts on Influencing others to do better or be better as a humane society. Do not solely think that the external environment controls you; also rationalize with your self-motivational abilities and reasoning.
  2. Develop a personal objective to reach.If you do not own an agenda or personal schedule, create one. Effective time management has proved to help professionals become successful and rid of any clutter in their lives and brains. This goes for everyone!
  3. Learn how to prioritize. This is significantly important for those who have trouble with procrastinating. For students or professionals, isn’t it awful to cram knowledge into your brain for an exam or rush a report to submit to your executives. Stop leaving the first things on your list till last. Sometimes we shouldn’t leave the best things for last.
  4. We interact with other humans on a daily. Even if we do not want to see them face-to-face, you have to collaborate with people virtually as well. Thinking with a WIN-WIN state of mind opens many opportunities for us. We build character traits like Integrity, Maturity, and Abundance Mentality.
  5. For business professionals, it is imperative to evaluate the situation initially before making any irrational decisions. Don’t be afraid to ask your boss a question or give advise to a colleague that’s having trouble with a certain task. Just like receiving a message, we have to read it, encode it, send it, and wait for the receiver to interpret the content. Think first, then do.
  6. Many students will find this useful. Synergizing simply tries to incorporate collaborating ideas, open-mindedness, and cooperation into life’s process. Why do you think our professors assign tonnes of group assignments? To get us prepared for the real world, of course. Let’s value diversity, especially from living in a culturally diverse nation like Canada. Be open to others opinions because it can improve your interactions with them.
  7. A good, balanced lifestyle no matter what profession encompasses four main areas in life: Physical, Social/Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual. Keep all for areas of your life active and you will see amazing results.
